A sheltered suburban entry with gray lap siding, buff brick, concrete steps and a small copper-leaved tree in soft autumn light.

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the community band plays Christmas music on a stage in downtown Papillion and counts down to the lighting. Then the mayor and a group of local children flip a giant switch, and the downtown display lights up around the crowd. The Papillion Community Foundation puts that display at more than 800,000 lights.

This year the Foundation's Winter Wonderland page carries the "Hallmark 2026 Christmas Town Sweeps" finalist seal. Papillion didn't win the contest, and Hallmark's rules allow that seal to promote free events only.

How the Contest Ended

Papillion was one of the finalists in the Merriest Christmas Towns Contest. The official rules name Hallmark Media United States as the sponsor, not the greeting card company. The City of Papillion announced the finalist spot on August 14, 2026. That same day, KETV reported the news and urged viewers to vote every day through September 4. On September 2, 3 News Now repeated that votes were free and could be cast once a day. WOWT covered the final day of voting.

Hallmark's contest page now names Carlinville, Illinois, as the winner. Papillion, NE is still listed among the finalists. Carlinville gets the "Hallmark's Merriest Christmas Town" title and the chance to be the filming location for a Hallmark movie. Further agreements still have to be negotiated before that happens.

All that daily voting didn't decide the result on its own. Under the official rules, a panel of judges chosen by Hallmark picked the winner. They scored each town on four categories: Community Spirit, Holiday Traditions, Neighborhood Charm and Goodwill. Public voting ran August 14 through September 4. Judging followed through about mid-September.

Mayor David Black summed up why the town entered when he spoke to City Lifestyle:

"The number one thing we hear each holiday season from visitors to Papillion is, 'Wow, I feel like I'm in a Hallmark movie.'"

What a Runner-Up Town Gets

The rules give each runner-up an official "Official Hallmark Christmas Town" designation and a promotional toolkit for a period Hallmark sets. The toolkit includes:

  • An Official 2026 Hallmark Christmas Town Digital Seal, a badge for websites, tourism materials and social media
  • Social and marketing templates, ready-made graphics, captions and story templates for holiday programming
  • Countdown to Christmas promotional assets, approved Hallmark Channel imagery, logos and messaging for local promotions tied to that season

The seal comes with one firm limit. The rules say towns can use it "to promote free events only." The rules also say the prizes have no retail value.

That limit decides which parts of Papillion's season can carry the Hallmark name. Paid events can't use the seal. Free community events can. Papillion's best-known holiday tradition, and the one its nomination highlighted, is Winter Wonderland. Much of that evening is advertised as free, and the Foundation has put the seal on its event page.

The Night Carrying the Seal

Winter Wonderland 2026 runs Saturday, November 28, from 4 to 8 p.m. The address is 109 N. Washington St., and the Papillion Community Foundation hosts it. The tradition dates to 2009. The Foundation and the City of Papillion Parks Department have run it together since then. City materials credit the Parks Department with creating the light display.

Here's what the Foundation lists for the night:

  • Santa inside the Historic Portal Schoolhouse. Every guest gets a free candy cane and one Christmas wish.
  • Free hot chocolate from several vendors around the grounds, while supplies last.
  • Community carriage rides through downtown Papillion, plus hayrack rides.
  • Outdoor firepits set up around the event.
  • Live music from local musicians, students and bands.
  • A Christkindl Market, an outdoor market for local artisans, makers and small businesses.

The Christkindl Market listing on Eventeny is still open for vendor applications. The list of makers will fill in closer to the date.

The Foundation's own summary on its Winter Wonderland 2026 page puts it this way: "Every year, as the 800,000+ lights are turned on to illuminate Downtown Papillion, thousands of neighbors gather to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season." The Hallmark judges scored towns on Community Spirit and Holiday Traditions. A community night held downtown every year since 2009 speaks to both categories.

The Rest of the Season, Around That Saturday

Winter Wonderland sits between two other dates on Papillion's holiday calendar. One lists no ticket and one charges $25, and that difference decides where the Hallmark seal can show up.

Date Event Where Cost
Saturday, Nov. 21, 6 to 8 p.m. 19th Annual Holiday Parade & Tree Lighting Middle of Towne Center, Shadow Lake Towne Center, 7775 Towne Center Pkwy. No ticket listed
Saturday, Nov. 28, 4 to 8 p.m. Winter Wonderland Downtown Papillion, 109 N. Washington St. Free hot chocolate and candy canes; no admission listed
Sunday, Dec. 6, noon to 3 p.m. 3rd Annual Downtown Papillion Christmas Cookie Crawl Starts at The Book Nook, 114 N. Washington St. $25 ticket

Shadow Lake goes first. Shadow Lake Towne Center's 19th Annual Holiday Parade & Tree Lighting starts with the parade at 6 p.m. on November 21. Fireworks from Bellino Fireworks and the Salvation Army Kroc Center follow right after. Santa is on the schedule, along with what the center calls surprise parade guests. It lands exactly one week before Winter Wonderland, so the two lightings are two Saturdays in a row at opposite ends of town.

The Cookie Crawl comes after. On Sunday, December 6, The Book Nook hosts the 3rd Annual Downtown Papillion Christmas Cookie Crawl. Local businesses open their doors as stops, and each one hosts a local cookie vendor. The Papillion Downtown Business Association lists 15 local businesses as stops. The Event Vesta listing prices tickets at $25 and expects 300 or more participants. Because it's ticketed, it's the kind of event the Hallmark seal's free-events-only rule leaves out. The crawl still happens on Washington Street, a few doors from where the lights go on eight days earlier, and it costs less than many holiday outings.

Planning Around November 28

Winter Wonderland runs four hours on a single evening, so it helps to know the order of events. The countdown and switch-flip on stage turn on the display. The band plays Christmas music in the lead-up. The Santa line forms at the Historic Portal Schoolhouse, and the hot chocolate is free only while it lasts. If you're bringing kids or hosting out-of-town family for Thanksgiving weekend, aim to arrive early for both.

The Foundation's event page hasn't posted parking arrangements or street closures for this year yet. Check the Papillion Community Foundation and the City of Papillion before you head downtown on the 28th.

Our team at Reid English Group loves seeing neighbors fill downtown for these nights as much as you do. If this holiday season has you thinking about your own next chapter in Papillion, whether that's staying put, moving up or moving closer to Washington Street, we'd be glad to talk it through over coffee. Schedule a Consultation, and we'll start with your timeline.
